On the morning of November 1, the "Academician Campus Visit" activity, sponsored by the Graduate Work Department and undertaken by the School of Electrical Engineering, was held in the Science Hall. Anjan Bose—Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Foreign Member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering—was invited to give a report titled "Success in Engineering Research". This report also served as the opening report of the 17th Graduate Academic and Cultural Festival of the School of Electrical Engineering.
Before the report meeting, Yan Xuedong, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Beijing Jiaotong University, met with Bose. The two parties exchanged views on discipline construction, academic exchanges, and cooperation.
At the report meeting, starting from the differences between scientific research and engineering research, Bose analyzed the roots of engineering research. Combining dimensions such as theory and experiment, engineering science and engineering practice in engineering research, he introduced the thinking and abilities that graduate students need to possess to conduct good engineering research. He pointed out that in the process of researching engineering problems, it is necessary to make appropriate and thorough plans for fund support, paper publication, academic exchanges, and monograph publishing. He emphasized that engineering problems and the impact of research results are also important factors determining success. He focused on how to evaluate whether the research conducted has an impact on the real world, which aroused strong interest in engineering research among teachers and students present.
In the exchange session, Bose answered questions raised by students, such as "What abilities should graduate students focus on improving in the process of growth", "How to regulate pressure during research", and "How to contribute to publishing successful academic works". He encouraged graduate students to lay a solid professional foundation, broaden their academic horizons, cultivate a spirit of innovation, learn to enjoy life, and achieve self-growth and breakthroughs.
Wu Mingli, Dean of the School of Electrical Engineering, hosted the report meeting. He hoped that teachers and students present would take this "Academician Campus Visit" as an opportunity, seize the chance in various activities of the subsequent Academic and Cultural Festival, learn from famous experts and scholars, communicate with and learn from outstanding classmates, and bravely climb the peaks on the road of study and scientific research.
Zhu Xiaoning, Executive Vice Dean of the Graduate School; Liu Yan, Director of the Graduate Work Department; Xu Yin, Deputy Director of the Department of Human Resources; Bi Fei, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office; as well as relevant leaders and professors of the School of Electrical Engineering participated in the meeting.
Anjan Bose was born in January 1946. He is an electrical engineering expert, engineering educator, Member of the US National Academy of Engineering, Foreign Member of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Regents Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Washington State University.
Academician Bose is a pioneer in the field of modern power system operation and control. Since the 1970s, he has made a number of pioneering achievements in the field of power system operation and control, laying an important technical foundation for the emergence and development of smart grids.
In recent years, Academician Bose has carried out close cooperation with Beijing Jiaotong University in talent training, scientific research, administrative management and other fields. Since 2018, Academician Bose has served as the Honorary Dean of the International School of New Energy, making a series of substantive and pioneering efforts in the internationalization construction of the school.
