In 1912, the Beijing Railway Management Training Institute established a 2-year Advanced Electrical Engineering Class A.
In 1958, the Department of Electrification Engineering set up two majors: Electric Locomotive and Railway Power Supply.
In 1961, the Department of Electrification Engineering merged with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and was renamed the Department of Railway Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
In 1962, the original majors of the Department of Electrical Engineering were abolished, and the equipment was transferred to Lanzhou Railway Institute.
In 1977, the major of Locomotive Electric Transmission was restored (under the Teaching and Research Section of Railway Machinery).
In 1986, the Department of Electrical Engineering and the major of Electric Traction and Drive Control were restored.
In 1987, the major of Applied Electronic Technology was added.
In 1993, the major of Railway Electrification was added.
In 1997, it merged with the Department of Mechanical Engineering to form the School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
In 2000, the former Beijing Higher Vocational College of Electric Power was merged into the university, and together with the Department of Electrical Engineering of the original School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, it formed the School of Electrical Engineering.
In 2001, the major of "Electrical and Information Engineering" was added.
In 2003, the two majors of Electrical Engineering and Automation, and Electrical and Information Engineering began enrollment under the category of Electrical and Information, aiming to cultivate undergraduate talents with a broad academic background.
In 2005, the university set up the characteristic major (direction) of Rail Transit Electrification, which was rated as a national-level characteristic major in 2009.
In 2013, the majors of "Electrical Engineering and Automation" and "Electrical and Information Engineering" were merged into the major of "Electrical Engineering and Automation".
In 2015, the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs approved the establishment of the "International School of New Energy".
In 2019, it was approved as a national-level first-class undergraduate major construction site.
In 2024, it obtained the authorization to offer the professional doctoral degree in Energy and Power.
